When the living subject is transformed into one of the many creatures of the night, a sort of metamorphosis occurs. No longer celestial conduits, their souls invert and twist into beings of darkness.
When Mortificus arose as the first vampire, it was to his creator’s shock (their name lost to time) that the gift of true darkness bent him in such a way. Claws sprouted from once dull fingernails, and fangs burst from his gums, his visage becoming far more jagged and gaunt.
These are the tools that a creature of the true night must utilize to obtain what they require: fresh, living blood from mortal vessels. The blood allows vampiric creatures to thrive in their undead state, keeping them tethered to their bodies despite the overwhelming power threatening to seep from their bones and crawl back to the cosmos.
Fangs to puncture the toughest skin and draw out the ichor within.
Talons to catch their prey and rip them to pieces if required.
These are the tools of any apex predator.
Talons and fangs vary in style depending on the vampire’s origin, evolution, and where they dwell. They can often have other meanings as well.
Most vampires possess only two fangs, some four. More is usually an oddity and a sign of something rare, something deeper. Exceeding these numbers can signify something monstrous, something abnormal. Beware those with more bite than even their own kin.
